JUAN C. ZARATE is the former Deputy Assistant to the President and Deputy National Security Advisor for Combating Terrorism from 2005 to 2009. He is currently a Senior Adviser at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington DC, the Senior National Security Analyst for CBS News, and consults for companies and organizations on national, homeland, and financial-related security, technologies, and investments.
In his role as Deputy Assistant, Zarate was responsible for developing and overseeing the implementation of the U.S. government's counterterrorism strategy. He chaired numerous high-level inter-agency groups including the government's Counterterrorism Security Group (the collection of senior U.S. counterterrorism officials). He was also responsible for overseeing all policies related to transnational security threats, including counternarcotics, maritime security, hostages, international organized crime, money laundering, and critical energy infrastructure protection.
