Joel Gold

Psychiatrist; Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry, NYU School of Medicine

JOEL GOLD, M.D. is Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at New York University School of Medicine and an Attending Psychiatrist in the Department of Psychiatry at Bellevue Hospital Center. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Brown University, earning a B.Sc. in Neuroscience, with honors, and an M.D.C.M. from McGill University. He completed a residency in Psychiatry at Bellevue Hospital Center and New York University Medical Center where he also completed a Fellowship in Geriatric Psychiatry. Joel is the co-founder of the Tibetan Support Group, which he led for five years, at the Bellevue/NYU Program for Survivors of Torture. He was Unit Chief of the Inpatient Psychiatric Training Unit at Bellevue from 2003-2005. He became Director of Psychiatric Emergency Services in 2006 and was Director of the Psychiatric Outpatient Division from 2007-2008.

Joel has published articles in such peer-reviewed journals as the New England Journal of MedicineSciencePsychiatryThe Journal of Traumatic StressThe Journal of Nervous and Mental DisordersThe American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse, and The American Journal of Epidemiology. He is the author of chapters in the Psychiatry Clerkship Guide, second edition, and co-author of the chapter on “Survivors of Torture,” the first of its kind to be published in Kaplan and Sadock’s Comprehensive Textbook of Psychiatry, the pre-eminent psychiatric textbook in English. He is on the Board of Directors of the Tibetan Education and Children’s Healthcare Fund, a not-for-profit NGO. In addition to being on staff at Bellevue, Joel is a Research Fellow at the Center for Urban Epidemiologic Studies of the New York Academy of Medicine and has a private practice in Manhattan.
