ANTONIO R. DAMASIO, M.D. Ph.D is the David Dornsife Professor of Neuroscience and Director, Brain and Creativity Institute, at the University of Southern California, where he studies the fundamental
mechanisms of cognition
and cognitive
and behavioral disturbances caused by diseases of central nervous
systems Damasio was elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences
in 1999 and has been the recipient of numerous honors worldwide.
He is
the author of The
Feeling of What Happens: Body and Emotion in the Making of Consciousness;
Descartes'
Error: Emotion, Reason, and
the Human Brain; and Looking for Spinoza: Joy, Sorrow, and the
