PASCAL BOYER is an anthropologist and psychologist who uses cognitive and field methods to understand the acquisition of religious belief. His latest book is Religion Explained: The Evolutionary Origins of Religious Thought. He teaches at the Psychology Department, Washington University in St. Louis.
