This image was painted on the wall of a cave in Vilafames, Spain, about
15000 years ago. When I came across it in 2006 I was taken aback to see its
resemblance to a drawing I had made a few years earlier to illustrate the
interiority -- and privacy -- of consciousness. Was the Neolithic artist
giving us a map of what it's like to be human?
